Does Blood Artist trigger under Rest in Peace?

Published and reviewed by MtG-RC Editorial

The scenario

You control Blood Artist and Rest in Peace. Murder would destroy another ordinary creature on the battlefield. Does Blood Artist trigger for that creature?

Short answer

No. Rest in Peace replaces the move to the graveyard with exile. The creature never goes from the battlefield to a graveyard, so it does not die and Blood Artist does not trigger for it.

Step by step

  1. Murder would destroy the creature, normally putting it into its owner's graveyard.
  2. Rest in Peace's static ability creates a replacement effect. Instead of going to the graveyard, the creature goes to exile.
  3. Blood Artist watches for a creature dying. Since 'dies' means moving from the battlefield to a graveyard, that event never happens here. There is no death trigger to respond to.

What changes the answer?

A leaves-the-battlefield trigger

The creature did leave the battlefield. An ability that watches for leaving, rather than dying, may trigger. Always check the precise event an ability watches.

Remove Rest in Peace first

If Rest in Peace leaves before the creature would go to the graveyard, its replacement effect is no longer present. Assuming no other replacement applies, the creature dies and Blood Artist triggers.
