Humility plus Glorious Anthem: are your creatures 1/1 or 2/2?

Published and reviewed by MtG-RC Editorial

The scenario

You control an ordinary Grizzly Bears and Glorious Anthem. Humility is also on the battlefield. There are no counters, other effects, or relevant abilities. Does the order the enchantments entered change your Bears' power and toughness?

Short answer

Your Bears is 2/2 with no abilities, regardless of which enchantment entered first. Humility sets base power and toughness to 1/1 in layer 7b. Glorious Anthem adds +1/+1 in layer 7c, after that base-setting effect.

Step by step

  1. Humility removes creature abilities in layer 6. Glorious Anthem is a noncreature enchantment in this scenario, so Humility does not remove its static ability.
  2. In power/toughness sublayer 7b, Humility sets the Bears' base power and toughness to 1/1.
  3. In sublayer 7c, Anthem modifies those values by +1/+1. The result is 2/2. You do not simply let the newest enchantment override every older effect.

What changes the answer?

Several base-setting effects

If two effects apply within the same layer or sublayer, timestamps and sometimes dependency rules matter. This example has effects in different sublayers, so comparing their timestamps is not the deciding step.

An animated enchantment

If Glorious Anthem itself becomes a creature, ability removal can change the interaction. That is outside this case's assumptions and needs a separate layer analysis.
