Can Cloudshift blink a creature token back?

Published and reviewed by MtG-RC Editorial

The scenario

You cast Cloudshift targeting an ordinary creature token you control. Cloudshift resolves and exiles that token. Does it return before state-based actions make it cease to exist?

Short answer

No. A token that has left the battlefield cannot move to another zone or return to the battlefield. That restriction applies during resolution, before the later state-based action makes the token cease to exist.

Step by step

  1. The token is a legal creature target for Cloudshift. The first instruction exiles it.
  2. Cloudshift then tries to return it during the same resolution. Rule 111.8 prevents a token that has left the battlefield from coming back, so it stays in exile.
  3. After the spell finishes resolving, state-based actions are checked and the token in exile ceases to exist. The absence of a mid-resolution SBA check does not bypass the separate token movement rule.

What changes the answer?

A nontoken creature

A normal creature card can return under Cloudshift's instructions. It becomes a new object, with the usual consequences for counters, damage, and attachments.

A token dies instead

A token can go to a graveyard and cause death triggers before it ceases to exist. 'Tokens cannot return' is not the same as 'tokens never enter a graveyard.'
